About Us

Munro Competion Shoes was founded by Bobby Munro.

Both as a highland dancer who competed at the Highland Games dance competitions, and as a leading dancer in a group of dancers who performed at many Scottish functions throughout the U.K., Bobby wanted shoes that showed the dancers' feet to perfection. So he designed a shoe that was light and flexible and that enhanced the outline of the foot. He sold these shoes at Highland Games dance competitions, day-schools and by mail order.

I first met Bobby when I was a student, attending the R.S.C.D.S. teachers' certificate class in London. Bobby had successfully completed this two year course and came to visit the class one evening. He invited me to join his weekly highland class in London.

Later, when Elizabeth Nelson and I established our annual summer school at Philipps House in Dinton, Bobby became one of our most popular Highland teachers.

How the Garretts became involved with Munro Competion Shoes.

During the 1990s Bobby was living in Sweden. His mother was despatching shoes to dancers from Writtle in Essex.

One day in August I telephoned to place an order to take to Dinton. To my surprise Bobby took the call himself. He asked whether I would take over despatching the shoes. So in a hired van David and I drove up to Writtle and returned to Sussex with boxes and boxes of Munro Competition shoes. Our spare bedroom was soon transformed with shelving into a store room for dancing shoes.

Who wears Munro Competition Shoes?

Young children and experienced dancers. One of our most prestigious teachers, Mervyn Short, has worn Munro Competion Shoes for many years. He came to Dinton in the mid 1990s to teach Highland and Scottish Country Dancing. He has encouraged many dancers to wear our shoes.
